WHAT IS A NOTARY PUBLIC?
Notaries are a separate specialised branch of the legal profession. Not all solicitors are notaries but most notaries are solicitors. There are currently only about 1000 practising notaries in total in England and Wales.
The status of a Notary is recognised worldwide and notarial work will almost always have a foreign element. A Notary is very rarely needed for domestic legal work but other jurisdictions often require documents to be produced by, certified by or signed before a Notary.
Frequently by using a Notary in this country the individual or company entering in to a foreign transaction will avoid the need to actually travel abroad to sign the necessary documentation.
